More than 40 years ago I became involved in the criminal justice system in the United States.

 

I wasn't a cop, or a lawyer, or a probation officer. Admittedly my route to prisons, courtrooms and rehab centers was a unique one. I read a play "Fortune and Men's Eyes" written by John Herbert, a man who had been incarcerated as a teenager. President Obama - painfully - is learning that a sense of entitlement inflicts persons with liberal credentials as well as the predictable Philistines on the right. Tom Daschle, assuming he had special privileges about being taxed, eliminated himself from a Cabinet position. A few years back, way before there was any exposed financial crunch, I raised some questions.

I am not Paul Krugman. In fact, I readily admit that the entire financial system and Wall Street maneuvers baffle me. I understand supply and demand but it seems to have disappeared with the Hula Hoop.

This week was an emotional tidal wave – watching that patch-quilt array of Americans hungry for a new start, gathered in our nation’s capital on Tuesday. It was more than exhilarating.

 

Like most of my friends, my joy was accompanied by tear.
